A number of missed chances proved costly as Chirnside bowed out of the South Cup to last years winners Shotts Victoria.

Chirnside should of been one up within the first minute but Lackenby fluffed a header from close range after a good cross by Shennan. The early intent from Chirnside continued as they pressed Shotts in their own half and another good chance went a begging when Lackenby was sent through on goal but he missed the target with the keeper to beat.

The home side were now well on top but again wasteful finishing would prove costly, with Lackenby again missing when through on the keeper and Condy missing from a yard out after scuffing his attempt at goal.

Shotts finally got going and in one of their first attacks they scored after some poor marking by the Chirnside midfield allowed the winger through on the angle after a good one two and a cool finish beating Todd at the front post. Chirnside did not let this dampen their spirits and continued to press for the equaliser but again poor finishing in the final third kept the score at one nil until half time.

The home side began the second half again on the front foot but chances came and went. Shotts were now making very few attacks as they struggled to get a hold of the ball but some resolute defending kept them in the lead.

Chirnside made a change and introduced Young for Lackenby and an immediate impact was almost had but the Shotts keeper saved well at the front post. The papermakers then got the goal they deserved when a shot by Shennan was blocked and the rebound fell to Tweedie to volley home from twelve yards.

Chirnside were now going for the win with 15 minutes left but found the well organised Shotts defence holding firm. Young had one last chance from a free kick but saw his effort go just over the bar.

The first half of extra time saw Shotts attack with a bit more intent but Chirnside limited them to long range efforts. However Shotts retook the lead when some silly play by Tweedie in the middle of the pitch saw him lose the ball and the midfielder smashed a 35yard stunner into the top corner.

The second half of extra time began with Chirnside again pressing the game but one more they found the Shotts defence blocking everything. With 5 minutes to go Chirnside got the equaliser when a good cross by Pollock was met by Condy to slot home past the on rushing keeper.

From the restart Shotts almost got back in the lead but the striker missed a header with the keeper to beat. Chirnside didn't heed the warning and Shotts did take the lead with 2 minutes left after again a cross from the right was met by the striker to head home. Chirnside did have the ball in the net again from the restart but Condy was blown up for offside and Chirnside bowed out of the South Cup.
