Chirnside United 2 – Leithen Rovers 4

This was Chirnside United’s first game of the season and they couldn’t have got off to a worse start with 5 players out, a host of missed chances and two own goals against a very good side in Leithen Rovers.

Rovers had two chances to open the scoring in the first 15 minutes but the striker blasted over from 8 yards and the United Keeper Martin Todd made a fine save to stop the same striker from scoring from a shot from 18 yards. On 20 minutes Adam Smith went one on one with the Keeper after he was played through from a pass from Keir Blaikie but he scuffed his shot making an easy save for the Rovers’ Keeper.

Within a minute from that miss the Rovers took the lead after a free kick rebounded off the Chirnside Wall and was chipped back in for a free header for the Rovers’ No. 10. The Rovers doubled their lead after half an hour with Keeper Todd fumbling a free kick into his own net. Adam Smith once again had two great chances to put Chirnside on level terms but again the chance went a begging.

Rovers capitalised once again from those missed chances and scored number 3 from their No. 8 when he evaded three tackles to slot the ball home. Chirnside did pull a goal back from a Robert Armstrong cross with Smith making no mistake this time at the back post. Joe Condy did have the ball in the net just before half time but the Referee saw something that nobody else did and disallowed the goal.

Chirnside came out all guns blazing in the second half and got right back in the game on the hour mark with a great individual goal from Robert Armstrong to make the score 3-2 to the Rovers. Adam Turner and Adam Smith got in each other’s way when they both went for the same ball and that was another chance gone. Ryan Purves went close from an angled shot from 18 yards but on 80 minutes disaster struck for Chirnside when Keeper Todd decided to show the Chirnside Strikers how it should be done after he scuffed a harmless cross into his own net, this effectively killed off any chance Chirnside had of getting anything out of this game with the Rovers winning 4 – 2.
