It was the last league fixture for both teams on Tuesday night at Comrades Park with weather and playing conditions ideal for the home teams season finale.

The visitors who already had the league sewn up a couple of weeks ago and still have two cup finals to play started the brighter of the two teams and Cowe in the Chirnside goal had to look sharp early on. The home team who had not played for three weeks looked sluggish and struggled in the opening exchanges to get close to their sharper opponents.

It was no surprise to see the away team take the lead on the 10 minute mark. A corner from the right was swung in and the central midfielder powered his header home with no markers in sight.

Chirnside tried to push forward after this and Windram saw his shot go wide from a tight angle. Pencaitland added number two with 15 minutes of the half left to play. A run and cut back down the left wing was met by the striker and his first time shot beat Cowe in the Chirnside goal.

The second half kicked off and almost straight away Pencaitland could have extended their advantage but the substitute striker dragged his shot wide with just the keeper to beat.

The miss seemed to spur on the home team and ten minutes later they had pulled a goal back. Windrams initial shot was blocked by the goalkeeper but the rebound fell to Blaikie and the big striker blasted his shot home into the bottom corner of the net. McCrudden was also starting to cause problems down the right and from one of his cross balls Blaikie almost got the equaliser but couldn't quite get his head on it.

The equaliser came with 20 minutes to go when Stobie played a ball through to Windram and the striker calmy picked his spot and tucked his shot home. Pencaitland began to press again after this and Cowe again had to make a few good saves to keep the scores level.

At the other end Young had a header rebound off the bar and the away team also saw a shot cannon off the bar after Cowe had brilliantly denied the striker with the first shot.

With time running out the home team thought they had got the winner but Strachans scorching left foot volley which was net bound hit Windram on the line and flew over the bar to safety. The game finished all square and that brought to an end Chirnsides season which will see them finish in seventh position if Leithen Rovers defeat West Barns in the final league game of the season.
