Chirnside progressed to the next round of the Waddell Cup with an indifferent performance against a battling Tweedmouth Amateur Colts side.

Chirnside started the brighter of the two sides and looked to stamp their authority on the game. Despite their possession Chirnside struggled to create any clear cut chances in the opening 15 minutes with poor passing and ball retention in the final third of the pitch the main problem.

However Chirnside finally created some chances when some good work down the right saw McCrudden send a good cross into the box which saw the ball land at Lauders feet but his snap shot on the turn was turned away by a reaction save by the keeper. The chances started to come thick and fast for the home side, this time Strachan swung in a cross form the left which was met by Windram on the volley but he saw his shot cannon off the bar, Windram was then on hand for another chance after a good through ball by Purves down the inside right channel but Windram dragged the ball wide of the left hand post. The hom eside finally got on the score sheet when a corner from Strachan was met by captain Young to thump home the header.

Chirnside should then have doubled their lead but Windram made one of the worst decisions and misses ever seen at Comrades Park. The young striker was through on goal with only the keeper to beat but for some reason only known to him he decided to try and chip the keeper when a simple side foot into the net would have been better. This miss seemed to spur Tweedmouth on and they started to come back into the game, but Chirnside managed to score another goal from a corner as Purves met the ball with a thumping header. Tweedmouth began to dominate the final 15 minutes of the half but failed to create any chances while Chirnside did create one more chance but Stobie pulled his shot wide after playing a good one two into the box.

HT 2-0

Tweedmouth began the second half as they had ended the first, pressing Chirnside high up the pitch and forcing Chirnside into hitting the ball long. As the half progressed Chirnside’s play and work rate became sloppier as Tweedmouth continued to hunt for the goal to bring them back into the game, but they found the Chirnside backline difficult to breakdown. Despite being under the cosh Chirnside still managed to create good chances to put the game to bed but efforts from McCrudden, Lauder and Windram were squandered.

Tweedmouth continued to try and get a goal back but they found Stobie and Christie in the Chirnside back line in top form. However they got the goal that they deserved when some slack marking by the Chirnside midfield allowed runners into the box where a good move resulted in the midfielder tucking the ball home with relative ease. Tweedmouth were now well on top and Chirnside introduced Morrison and Blaikie to try and relieve some of the pressure that the home side were under. Tweedmouth had other ideas and scored the equaliser when once again slack marking allowed the striker to shoot from 25 yards and the ball looped over Cowe in the Chirnside goal to make it two all.

This seemed to kick start Chirnside a little and they went into the lead again when corner from Strachan was met by Morrison whose header goal bound was volleyed in by Windram who ended his dismal afternoon in front of goal. Tweedmouth responded again and would have equalised once if it was not for the heroics of Christie who threw himself in front of a goal bound effort. Chirnside then added another after some great ball control by Blaikie setup Windram to grab his second from a tight angle. Tweedmouth kept plugging away to the final whistle which Chirnside were relieved to hear after a couple of goalmouth scrambles late on.
