Chirnside turned in one of their worst performances of the season on Saturday and were blown out of the Quarter Finals of the South Cup by a Penicuik side who adapted to the conditions far better than the home side.

Chirnside made one change after last weekends win over West Barns with Strachan in to replace Windram. The home team kicked off into the gale force wind and for the first 20 minutes held their own despite the extremely difficult conditions.

The first chance of the game came Chirnside's way when Turner cut in from the right but delayed too long before getting his shot away. Not long after Blaikie had a chance when he shot over the bar from 12 yards out. On the quarter hour mark Chirnside did take the lead when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Turner chipped the ball over the wall to find Blaikie who with his back to goal turned and volleyed into the back of the net.

It was then backs to the wall stuff for Chirnside after that with Penicuik taking advantage of the wind firing in shots at every opportunity keeping Chirnside's keeper Cowe on his toes. However, they did grab a goal five minutes before half time when the home defence failed to clear a high ball into the box allowing their midfielder to volley home from close range.

With Chirnside having the wind advantage in the second half they thought that it was just a matter of time before they dominated possession but it was Penicuik who had other ideas and had the bulk of the play scoring three goals into the wind.

The first of these came when their left winger was allowed to cut into the box and get his shot away. Cowe looked to have dealt with the shot comfortably but somehow lost grasp of it and their midfielder was on hand to poke the ball over the line. Penicuik were then awarded a free kick 20 yards out in front of the goal. A superbly struck shot looked a goal all the way but Cowe made up for his earlier error by pulling off a fantastic save diving down to his right to put the ball round the post for a corner.

At the other end Lauder went one on one with the keeper but he was pushed out too wide and was unable to convert the opportunity. Pencuik's third goal followed a long throw on the left which fell to the feet of their striker who buried the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Purves thought he had pulled a goal back for the home side but his effort was disallowed with the referee deeming his challenge on the keeper to be dangerous. The away team added number four on the break with Cowe saving the initial shot but he could do nothing as the ball fell to the unmarked striker who blasted home from close range.

Chirnside did get a goal in the last minute when substitute Windram volleyed past their keeper following a cross from the left. Overall this was a very disappointing performance from Chirnside especially after the form they took into this game.
