Chirnside made the journey up the A1 on Saturday to take on Pencaitland in the semi-final of the Border Cup.

The away team were without last weeks two goal hero Windram for the first half due to work commitments and his place was taken up front by Lauder. The blustery wind conditions and heavy pitch meant there was never going to be much flowing football and whoever was going to win would need to grind out the result.

The home team kicked off down the slope with the wind behind their backs and they had Chirnside pinned back for most of the half. Although most of the play was in Chirnside's half during the first 15 minutes no clear chances were created. However 25 minutes in the deadlock was broken when the left back made a run past three defenders before shooting from inside the box which deflected off Christie's boot into the corner of the net giving Cowe no chance in the away goal.

Chirnside looked to hit on the break and use Lauder's pace but the Pencaitland defence stood firm. With 5 minutes to go in the half the home team doubled their advantage when a long ball from the back was played through and Stobie left it to Cowe but the alert striker nipped in to slot the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper from 12 yards.

The game could have been over as a contest with a minute to go in the half but Cowe made a great one handed save to deny the striker.

Chirnside began the second half on the front foot and within 5 minutes had pulled a goal back. A poor clearance by the home defence was punished by McCrudden whose left foot half volley nestled sweetly into the top right hand corner of the net.

The away team were now pushing for the equaliser and McCrudden was denied a second by the referee as he had flagged for offside. Pencaitland though were always dangerous when they broke forward and Cowe tipped a shot from just outside the box on to the post and the rebound was scrambled to safety.

Chirnside thought they had the equaliser with 20 minutes to go but Hoyle's shot was brilliantly tipped on to the post by the Pencaitland keeper. The away team had chances for the equaliser but substitute Windram and Lauder could not convert their chances.

With 5 minutes to go the home team scored the vital third goal when a cross from the left was headed back across goal and the striker who looked to be in an offside position nodded in from close range for his second of the game.
