Chirnside went down 2-3 at home to Hawick Waverley in the first game of the season after some terrible errors gifted Waverley the 3 points.

Chirnside fielded a very youthful side with eight of the starting eleven, 23 years old or younger with the Cowe brothers at the other end of the age band in their mid thirties. The home side started very brightly and played some good football with quick sharp passing and good movement off the ball. The experienced Waverly side struggled to get into the game but to their credit they held firm at the back with a combination of good defending and poor decision making in the final third by Chirnside.

Despite Chirnsides possession they struggled to create any clear cut chances with only limited efforts from long range from strikers Lough and Lauder. However with 30 minutes gone Chirnside took a deserved lead when good play down the left from Windram saw Lauder released behind the Waverley back line, who took the ball on the half volley and rifled the ball into the net from the corner of the 18 yard box.

However Chirnsides lead lasted about a minute, when long ball upfield was brought under control by sweeper P.Cowe, who should have cleared his lines but decided to cut back in towards the middle of the goal and his resulting clearance from here was scuffed to the Waverley striker on the edge of the box for an easy tap in.

This deflated Chirnside and for the remaining 15 minutes of the half Waverley could have went three up if it was not for some good shot stopping by J.Cowe in the Chirnside goal.

Chirnside started the second half a bit better than they had ended the first putting some pressure on the Hawick goal but again the experienced Hawick side absorbed the pressure. Waverley soon got their second when a cross from the left was punched out to the edge of the box by keeper Cowe only for the Waverley striker to hit the ball on the half volley into the roof of the net. Again Chirnsides heads went down and Waverley began to enjoy their best spell of the match, however without really creating anything clear cut.

Chirnside weathered the storm and started to come into the game again. Finally Chirnside started to create some chances in the box but some good handling by the keeper and good blocks by the Waverley defence kept the Chirnside strikers at bay. Chirnside finally got the equaliser when good work by Young saw, Lauder played in again who calmly tucked the ball away under the on rushing keeper. Again the level score was short lived as Chirnside self exploded again, as within two minutes of the restart Waverley re-took the lead when a crazy ball by Strachan deep in his own half released the Waverley striker through on goal to slot under Cowe and make it 2-3. Chirnside had a great chance late on in the game to level the score but Windram hit straight at the keeper when trying to place a shot while clean through.
