Report

Chirnside came away with all three points away to Newtown on Saturday after a solid performance from every member of the squad. On a very heavy pitch Chirnside made their intentions clear from the start when only after 3 minutes Lauder played in his strike partner Kelly, who raced through on goal but he was thwarted by a good save by the home sides’ keeper. Chirnside continued to press and captain young wasn’t far away with an effort after a knock down by Morrison. The men in green were now rampant and should have gone one nil up but Kelly again shot straight at the keeper from close range. The away side then finally took the lead when a good corner saw Kelly challenge for the ball and from the resulting scramble the ball landed at Young’s feet who took the net off with a vicious drive. Chirnside then should have went two up, when again the ball was played into Kelly in the six yard box but after making a yard of space for himself he saw his shot rattle back of the crossbar. The match as very much going in Chirnside’s favour and they soon went two up when a handball in the box saw Young take the resulting penalty, however the keeper saved the spot kick but Windram arrived like a rat down a drain pipe to scuff the rebound into the net. Chirnside continued to pile in the pressure and would have had more goals if it was not for some good keeping from the Newtown goalie that had some good saves from Strachan, Kelly, Young and Lauder. Towards the end of the half Newtown did show some threat and had a couple of efforts at goal which were well saved by Black. The half ended though with Lauder hitting the crossbar this time with a glancing header from close range.

Chirnside continued their pressure in the second half and again were kept from increasing their lead with some inspired keeping which saw two great finger top saves from a Lauder header and Windram drive. However the game began to turn in Newtown’s favour when an injury for Chirnside full back Cowe forced a reshuffle. Newtown used the next 15 minutes well while Chirnside adjusted to the new team shape, but they couldn’t put any telling efforts on goal. Chirnside then settled back down and went looking for a third goal; once again they found the wood or keeping them at bay when two good flick on’s from Morrison and Kelly saw the ball land at Lauders feet but he saw his shot once again coming crashing back off the crossbar. However almost immediately following this Newtown went up the pitch to create a chance of their own, but Black won the battle of the one on one.

Chirnside did finally get the goal they were looking for, after some good play by Windram and K.Blaikie saw Lauder released down the right who swung in a delightful cross to see Kelly arrive through the air like a plane to power a diving header into the net. The game was now more or less over but to Newtown’s credit they kept battling and finally got a goal after a 20 yard volley from the striker deflected off Young and sneak in, off post to make it 3-1. Chirnside then finally put any comeback to bed on the 80th minute when the three substitutes K.Blaikie, R.Armstrong and A. Turner combined to cross for Lauder to tap in from close range.
