Chirnside gained a vital 3 points in consolidating their position in mid table of the Border Amateur ‘A’ division, after coming from a goal behind away to Hawick Waverley.

On a heavy Wilton Park Chirnside began kicking into the wind and were immediately put under the cosh with an explosive start from the young Waverley side. Waverley prodded and probed the Chirnside back line playing some good football down the flanks, however the failed to create any clear goal scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes.

Hawick continued to press and should have taken the lead when a ball chipped over the Chirnside defence saw the striker through on goal from a tight angle but with the keeper to beat he managed to shin the ball into the side netting and the chance went a begging. Waverley did finally take the lead through a set piece when a corner was swung into the box which saw the Chirnside fail to be strong in the challenge and in the resulting scramble the striker prodded the ball over the line.

This seemed to explode Chirnside into life and they almost equalised straight away when good work by Stobie and Young released new signing Jordan Lauder but he saw his shot from 18 yards well handled by the keeper. Chirnside were now playing the better football and finally got the equaliser when good work from Young saw him feed the ball into Lauder who in turn played a good ball through to Armstrong who managed to prod the ball past the keeper. Chirnside continued to press with Kelly and Young going close but to no avail and both teams went in level at the end of the first half.

HT 1-1

The second half began much as the first had ended with Chirnside on the front foot. Chirnside continued to press and continued to knock the ball about well but good defending by the Waverley back line kept the scores level. Chirnside finally took the lead on the 70 minute mark when from a corner, Waverley failed to clear the ball any great distance and it fell to Kieran ‘snakey’ Blaikie who then prodded the ball out to Armstrong who on the right who had cut in field to blasted the ball low past the keeper.

Both Waverley and Chirnside continued to try and play the ball about but both team were finding it increasingly difficult to break down the opposing defence. Waverley had their best spell of the second half where they won a number of corners in succession but some good marking by the away side and poor heading by the home side saw no end product.

Chirnside then brought on Strachan and J.Turner, and with almost immediate effect they created the third goal when a cross field pass by Turner was met by the wirey winger Strachan who then showed some good composure to play the ball into Lauder who tucked the ball home from a tight angle.

Waverly then had a couple of chances in the last ten minutes to make the finale of the game more interesting but on both occasions they failed to hit the target.
