Chirnside played host to Hawick Legion on Saturday with the visitors languishing at the foot of the League table after a poor start to the season.

These sides met in the 2009 South Cup Final but vast changes in personnel have been made since then to both teams. It was the home team who started the better looking to make amends for their disappointing defeat at West Barns last weekend. After two minutes they went a goal up when Kelly played Armstrong through and his shot from 18 yards beat the Keeper low to his right hand side.

Chirnside looked to build on their early advantage and Romaines should have made it two but he screwed his shot wide with just the Keeper to beat. The same player then had another chance but this time his shot ballooned over the bar.

Morrison was the next home player to have a chance but the Keeper brilliantly saved his well timed shot. Hawick were always dangerous on the break and almost caught Chirnside napping on the half hour mark but Stobie did well to clear the ball off the goal line with Black beaten.

The second half kicked off and again it was the home team looking to extend their lead and make the points safe. Ten minutes in Armstrong rounded the Keeper and made it number two. G. Kelly making his first team comeback also rounded the Keeper five minutes later but his shot from a tight angle hit the side netting. Romaines then thought he had a penalty after it looked like he was impeded by the Keeper but the referee waved away the claims.

Legion kept battling on and were rewarded 15 minutes from time when their Striker shrugged clear off his marker to shoot home past Black. The goal gave the away team hope that they might get something from this game and laid siege to the home goal. A corner from the right was headed off the Chirnside post by the Centre Half and the same player had a goal disallowed for offside minutes later.

With time running out Hawick then thought they had a penalty with shouts of handball but again the referee waved away the protests. Chirnside eventually hung on in the end to take a valuable three points.
