Report

Chirnside's poor start to the season continued with a first ever defeat by Newtown at home on Saturday.

It was the home team who started off brighter with the strong wind at their backs. The first chance of the game fell to Stobie but his shot from 12 yards was blocked by the Keepers legs. Turner and Armstrong then both had chances but failed to hit the target.

Newtown were quick on the break and were looking to play the ball out wide to their pacy wingers at every opportunity. Chirnside continued to apply the pressure but their final ball and touch in the box let them down on more than one occasion.

The away team then hit on the counter attack on the half hour mark and the Right Winger slid the ball through Blacks legs to give them the lead. Chirnside tried to get the equaliser before half time but Wood and Armstrong both had efforts just off target.

The second half kicked off with Newtown this time with the wind behind them and they looked to get that killer second goal straight from the off. Although the first ten minutes of the half seen them with the lions share of possession they rarely troubled Black in the Chirnside goal.

However it was the home team who equalised on the hour mark when Young converted a penalty following a handball from one of the Newtown Defenders. The goal should have acted as a wake up call to the men in green but five minutes later they were a goal down again when the visiting Right Back made a run which wasn't picked up and he slotted the ball past Black from 8 yards.

Chirnside pushed for the equaliser but Turner shot wide when put clean through by Romaines. Newtown hit the third and decisive goal ten minutes from time when again a run wasn't picked up by the home team and the Newtown Striker slotted home unopposed. With five minutes to go they added number four when a corner fell fortuitously at the feet of their Striker and he stabbed home from close range.
