Chirnside went down to a heavy defeat at Pencaitland away from home this week, but there were a few positives to take from the game for the young team.

Chirnside began the game playing down the hill and were on the back foot right from the start as the Pencaitland centre midfielder put pressure on Wood straight from the kick off and won the ball creating the first attack of the game. The home team continued to put pressure on the young Chirnside team and broke the deadlock after 15 minutes as the Pencaitland striker was brought down in the box and scored from the resulting spot kick.

Pencaitland again continued to pile on the pressure but this time the Chirnside defence held firm and the youngsters started to get more into the game, putting the home sides defence under a bit of pressure with Young and Turner combining well down the left side. Eventually the two managed to put the good work to some use and played the ball to the edge of the box for Woody to hammer home an uncharacteristic left footed drive low into the bottom corner of the goal, leaving the keeper no chance.

As the half drew to a close both sides midfields were on top of each other, with chances few and far between.

HT 1-1

Pencaitland came out the blocks the quickest and were quickly on the front foot giving Black in the Chirnside goal a few things to think about. The young evergreens eventually clicked into gear, and Armstrong and Romaines started getting a bit of luck up the right hand side as the Pencaitland defence tired, but against the run of play the home side’s MOM picked up the ball on the right dribbled past two players before hitting the ball on the bounce from the touchline, everyone stood and watched as the ball sailed over the top of Black and into the goal from close to 40 yards out!

This broke down what was a promising spell for Chirnside, and although they tried to keep in the game, goal number 3 was not far behind. With 20 minutes to go, Chirnside had to use all 3 subs within a space of 5 minutes as injuries and fatigue started to hit the team, and goals 4 and 5 followed.
