The new look team Chirnside began their league campaign with a hard fought point against an also new look Gala Rovers team at Netherdale.

Gala started the game with the wind at their back and put Chirnside on the back foot right from the off. Playing their usual passing game Gala tried to break down the Chirnside midfield and back line. Despite Gala’s usual dominance of possession they failed to find that defence splitting pass to create any chances in the penalty area with Chirnside back line restricting the home side to long range efforts.

Chirnside had a couple of half chances themselves on the counter attack but Turner and Blaikie failed to hit the target on both occasions. Gala again continued to press for the opener but rarely troubled stand in keeper Lugget in the Chirnside goal.

HT 0-0

The first 15 minutes of the half continued on from the first half with neither team really having any clear cut chances to open the scoring. The game continued in this manner until Gala scored the opener when a speculative daisy cutter shot from outside the area took a nasty bobble in front of keeper Lugget who could only finger tip the ball into the net. This gave Gala the incentive and they pressed for a second but the resilient hardworking Chirnside team kept them at bay.

Chirnside soon started to come into the game, and soon had a goal disallowed when a flick on from Morrison saw Turner go in with the keeper and bundle the ball over the line, but the ref chalked it off for offside against Turner. This fired up the young Chirnside team and the continued to push for the equaliser.

The first incident of the match soon arrived when Turner was sent through on goal by Blaikie only to be pulled back by the defender; this left the referee no option but to send him off. Chirnside continued to press for the elusive goal with Blaikie, Romanes, Young and Strachan all shooting high, wide and handsome. Strachan also had another couple of half chances from the edge of the penalty area but his erratic shooting kept the score level. Chirnside then got the equaliser they deserved with 10 minutes to go when a through ball was collected by the Gala keeper, but he then decided to try and take on the on rushing Romanes who duly dispossessed him of the ball and passed to Turner to score his first goal of the season.

To be fair to Gala they stepped up a gear and tried to get a winner but a good save by Lugget saw him tip the young Gala forwards shot on to the bar. Chirnside also had a great chance to score but Strachan misses the chance for glory as he saw the keeper tip his effort on to the post.
