Chirnside’s depleted squad failed in there attempt to win the Beveridge Cup after there second final appearance in as many years losing out to Gala Rovers at Earlston in the final game of the season.

Gala started the brighter and immediately had Chirnside on the back foot. But despite having the majority of the possession Gala failed to create any real clear cut chances. However there was no respite for the Chirnside back line as they defended resiliently keeping Gala Rovers out the penalty box.

On the 15 minute mark Gala took the lead when a fortunate rebound saw the ball loop into the air and then be nodded back across the goal for the Gala Rover player to nod in at the back post. Gala continued to press for another goal but once again failed to create in clear cut chances. Chirnside then had a half chance to score when Wright turned on the edge of the box but he saw his snap shot drift just wide.

Chirnside then nearly equalised on the stroke of half time when Henderson won a good header but saw the keeper scramble the ball to safety via the crossbar.

HT 0-1

The second was much the same as the first with Gala having the lions share of the possession but again failing to really test Black in the Chirnside goal. However 20 minutes into the second Gala’s second goal came when the increasingly weary looking Chirnside team failed to get the ball clear and the striker stuck the ball home from 15 yards.

The writing was on the wall now for the papermakers as Gala had them pinned on the edge of the 18 yard box. The third and fourth goals were not long in coming. The third goal arrived when a quick counter attack by Gala saw their striker race clear despite the efforts of Stobie to tuck the ball away. The fourth then arrived shortly after when the substitute winger managed to turn on the edge of the box put the ball past Black into the back of the net.
