Chirnside set up a mouth watering semi final tie with local rivals Duns after dispatching with West Barns in relatively easy style.

Played on the tight West Barns park the papermakers started well and should have went one up in the first few minutes but Shennan missed an easy chance after going one on one with the keeper. Chirnside did take the lead on the 10 minute mark when a good cut back from Shennan was controlled neatly by Turner on the edge of the box which allowed him to curl a good shot round the keeper low into the right hand corner.

West Barns didn’t let their heads drop with the early set back. They thought they had equalised when a bouncing ball failed to be dealt with by Chirnside and the West Barns striker bundled the ball into the net after a challenge with Black in the Chirnside goal, however the ref adjudged the striker had handled the ball and chalked off the goal.

With this let off Chirnside continued to look for a second goal but continually poor finishing from Shennan, Turner and Strachan leading the line saw the lead stay at one goal. With 15 minutes remaining in the half Chirnside got their second goal when a Young cross landed at the feet of Strachan and he blasted the ball into the net in off the bar. Chirnside then had chances to extend their lead but more bad finishing kept the score at 2 nil.

HT 0-2

Things didn’t get much better for Chirnside in front of goal with Young, Shennan and Turner all missing from inside the 6 yard box. West Barns were now finding it increasingly difficult to get any real momentum into their play as wave after wave of Chirnside attack seemed to create chances. Shennan’s abysmal day in front of goal continued as chance after chance went a begging for the normally clinical hitman. His normally equally clinical strike partner Turner also had chances to add to his tally but bad finishing and good keeping kept his total for the day at one goal.

However on the 75 minute mark Shennan finally broke his duck for the day when a cross from Strachan was met on the half volley by Shennan at the back post and he stuck it away. West Barns went close late on after a well struck freekick by the sweeper but Chirnside saw out the game to book their semi final spot.
