Chirnside failed in their attempt to retain the South of Scotland Cup in what turned out to be a poor performance in a poor game served up by both sides.

Chirnside started the game the brighter and knocked the ball about well for the first tem minutes of the game. Newtongrange then came into it a bit more but it was clear that both teams would struggle to play the ball on the deck on a very hard and rough surface due to the recent dry spell of weather. As the game descended into the half way point of the first 45 minutes it was apparent that both teams were edgy, with neither team taking that gamble that often creates a goal scoring opportunity. For the remainder of the half both defences traded long balls with no team having any real efforts on goal until Turner smashed a shot over from the edge of the box in the dying minutes of the half.

HT 0-0

The second half began in much the same vain as the first had ended with both defences winning the ball and clearing there lines. It wasn’t until the 70th minute that a break through was made. From a Newtongrange free kick that was lofted into the box the unmarked striker nodded the ball into the danger area where they managed to bundle the ball over the line to open the scoring.

Many thought this would have sprung Chirnside into life but the men in green couldn’t find any real rhythm. They did have a half chance however when Armstrong stole the ball from the full back and saw the keeper off the line but his chip from out wide sailed inches over the bar. Turner was then unlucky when a good ball from Hume was met on the volley by Turner at a tight angle but his effort went inches wide of the post.

With 8 minutes remaining Newtongrange grabbed there second in somewhat controversial circumstances. Play was allowed to go on when a through ball to the striker who was clearly offside resulted in him setting up the midfielder to score. Despite the protest of the Chirnside players the referee allowed the goal to stand.

This finally kicked Chirnside into gear as they pushed forward to try and get back into the game. With 6 minutes left they did so when Shennan was brought down 30 yards from goal and Turner dispatched the resulting free kick into the top corner. With 5 minutes remaining Chirnside pushed every thing forward but in doing so they were left open to the counter and Newtongrange had a goal chalked off for offside and rattled the post. Chirnside were then given a couple of half chances but Hume failed to convert. Then with only a couple minutes to go a Morrison header was tipped on to the crossbar and Newtongrange Star held on for the victory.
