Chirnside’s slim league hopes went down the pan after a disappointing defeat against a Waverley team battling for survival.

The game started on a pitch resembling one of the pig fields at Sanson Seal on the road to Berwick. Despite this Chirnside started brightly and had a couple of half chances in the first ten minutes but Shennan pulled one past the post and hit the side netting with another shot. Waverley settled down after 15 minutes and started to find some joy with the overlap on the left hand side however the quality of the final ball was missing and their earlier good work was undone. The game then went from an end to end battle with both teams trying to keep the ball out the boggy areas in the centre of the pitch. Waverley seemed to be adjusting to the conditions better than Chirnside but at the same time, struggling to create any clear cut chances with Chirnside restricting them to long range efforts. Chirnside were then unlucky not to score when a good turn by Turner saw his shot cannon back off the crossbar. Waverley then went close after a good freekick from 30 yards went just over the crossbar.

HT 0-0

The second half began with both teams trying to get some sort of momentum going. Chirnside started the brighter and were starting to get some joy down the right flank but again the quality of the final ball made chances hard to come by. Waverley then had a half chance to score but a good tackle from Stobie prevented them from testing Black out in the Chirnside goal. The game ran along from end to end until Chirnside failed to clear their lines and the ball ended up being laid out into the wing where the Waverley player cut inside then cut the ball back to his team mate who hit the ball first time and saw the ball loop off his shin over the players standing in the box into the roof of the net.

This finally woke Chirnside up and for the remaining 20 minutes of the game they pressured for an equaliser. Shennan was unlucky not to see his volley hit the back of the net as with the keeper unsighted the ball cannoned towards goal only to see the ball deflect off the keeper’s heel and onto the post with the resulting rebound being cleared off the line. Chirnside continued to press but again found good defending and lady luck against them as Morrison, Stuart and Turner all had efforts cleared or blocked on the line. With 5 minutes to go Waverley had a man sent off but they managed to hold off the Chirnside attacks to claim all three points.
