The Border Amateur League finally got back into action after several weeks of no football due to the bad weather conditions, and there was no better way for Chirnside to start the New Year than a game against local rivals Duns.

Duns started the game but within a few minutes of the start when a goal kick from Black in the Chirnside goal was flicked on by Turner and then by Morrison into the path of Young who then crossed for Shennan to tap in from close range. A shell shocked Duns restarted the game and it was evident from the restart what team was more up for it. The men in green were the more sharper and committed and didn’t let Duns get into any rhythm.

The second goal soon arrived when some good play by McCutcheon and Young saw Turner released down the inside left channel where a great first touch allowed him to prod the ball past the Duns keeper from the edge of the box to make it two nil.

Duns finally got a chance to score on the 20 minute mark when a knock down from a corner wasn’t dealt with by Chirnside by the Duns couldn’t convert. Chirnside then had another chance to score but Shennan made a mess of it after being gifted the ball after a poor goal kick by the Duns keeper. The home side did then go 3 up when a corner from Young wasn’t cleared by the Duns defence and in among the scramble Turner was able to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

Duns then finally made Black work in the Chirnside goal when a shot from long range seemed to be creeping into the bottom right corner but Black pulled out a great save tipping the ball round the post.

However on the 35 minute mark Chirnside made it 4 when a ball from Lauder saw Shennan pick it up at the corner of the 6 yard box and from this tight angle he blasted it in at the near post.

The final 10 minutes of the half saw the game get stretched with both sides failing to string any sort of decent play together.

HT 4-0

The second half began much the same way as the majority of the first half had went with the home side looking more likely to add to there tally.

The first 20 minutes of the first half were pretty uneventful until Chirnside finally got their 5th when a good flick from Armstrong allowed Stuart to lay the ball into Lauder who got his first of the game driving low past the keeper. Moments after this Chirnside should have been 6 up but the referee ruled it offside after Armstrong prodded home from a yard.

With 15 minutes remaining Duns started to come into it and got on the score sheet when a cross from the right was controlled by the striker where he managed to turn and blast the ball past Black in the Chirnside goal. Black however then made a good save at the feet of the same striker moments after. Duns then got a second goal that looked suspiciously offside but by this point the game was well and truly over.
