Report

Chirnside should feel aggrieved to have lost this encounter after being on top for much of the game away to Hawick Legion.

Chirnside began the game kicking down the slope and it was apparent from the start that it would take patience from the men in green to open the scoring as Legion chose to sit very deep allowing the Chirnside defence and goalkeeper to dribble to the half way line with the ball unopposed. With legion showing no attacking threat at all Chirnside set about trying to break them down. The early encounters proved how difficult it was going to be with Chirnside struggling to create any clear cut chances with Legion restricting them to long range efforts. On the 20 minute mark Chirnside got their first half chance when a good take down by Turner saw him turn on the edge of the box but his snap shot flew wide. Lauder was next to have a go at goal but the Legion keeper was on hand to make a comfortable save. In one of their rare forays into attack Legion also had a half chance but keeper Black was equal to the task.

With 45 minutes up in the first half Chirnside had the best chance of the game but what looked like an easy goal could have turned out to be the miss of the season. A good ball to the back post from Shennan evaded everyone but for Lauder who from two yards out had the simplest of task of putting the ball in the goal but the young striker got it wrong and hit the ball into the side netting to leave the score even at half time.

HT 0-0

The second half began in promising fashion for the away team as they immediately went on the attack, with Ponder, Turner and Lauder all making the Legion keeper work. Chirnside finally got the breakthrough when good battling by Ponder saw the Legion keeper try to clear his lines but he blasted the ball off Turner and the ball bounced into the goals to make it 1 nil.

Chirnside were very much in the ascendancy and should have made it two but Turner blasted a good chance over from inside the box. Chirnside then finally got the second goal when a good through ball by Young released Lauder who raced in on goal and clinically stroked the ball past the Legion keeper. Within 5 minutes of the restart Lauder again raced through on goal with only the keeper to beat but a silly shout from Shennan saw Lauder square the ball when there was no one there to hit.

Legion then got a goal back which looked suspiciously off-side when a snap shot from the striker got a lucky deflection and landed to the already offside legion player standing at the back post but the referee allowed the goal to stand. Chirnside did not let it dampen their spirits and continued in search of more goals. However Legion then scored again in controversial circumstances. A Legion player raced through on goal a good 3 yards offside however Black in the Chirnside goal made the first save from the one on one but the luck of the bounce saw the ball land favourably for the striker and he stabbed the ball goal bound only for the retreating Morrison to handle the ball while on the ground to prevent the goal. Morrison was shown a straight red card and to add to the away team’s woes Legion converted the resulting penalty. Chirnside now had to play the last 10 mins with 10 men. Despite the 10 men defending well and keeping Legion at bay it was again another offside goal that sealed the game for Legion when the striker raced clear from an offside position to finish well chipping Black in the Chirnside goal. Chirnside then pushed for the equaliser and thought they should have had a penalty deep in injury time when the Legion keeper cleaned out Ponder from behind in the penalty box but again the referee dismissed it.
