Chirnside entertained Gala Rovers on Saturday in what was billed to be the tie of the weekend in the Border Amateur.

The game started with Chirnside playing with a heavy tail wind and Gala trying to play their usual passing game into the strong breeze. The first 15 minutes were relatively uneventful as both teams tried to get to grips with the conditions. Gala then had the first half chance of the game when a good move down there right saw the ball get cut back to the edge of the box only for the midfielder to sky the resulting shot. The game then turned into a midfield battle with neither team getting much change out the other, with Chirnside pressing high up the pitch and Gala content to knock the ball about the midfield. Stuart then had a chance to score for Chirnside but he headed over from a Ponder corner. Shennan then had a half chance to score but pulled his shot from the edge of the area inches past the post. In the final 15 minutes of the half Gala pressed for an opener as they continued to pass the ball well, a good move from the away side almost resulted in a goal but the strikers snapshot from 12 yards hit the cross bar and went to safety. Gala then had another couple of long range efforts but nothing that really troubled Black in the Chirnside goal.

HT 0-0

The second half began much the same as the first had ended with Gala having the majority of the possession without really troubling the Chirnside back four. Chirnside finally got to grips with head wind and got the ball on the deck and started to do a bit of attacking of their own. Chirnside were now on the front foot and a succession of corners saw Morrison miss a free header and Christie have his shot cleared of the line. It didn’t seem to be the home side’s day and this was confounded further when a header from Stuart was headed goal bound by Windram only to be handled on the line by the Gala Rovers player but the referee waved the protest away and the game continued with Ponder smashing the resulting rebound off the crossbar. Gala continued to try and hit Chirnside on the counter but could not get past the dogged Chirnside defence and were limited to long range shots. Chirnside then had what was the best chance of the game when a good run down the right by Shennan saw him cross the ball for Turner who was free in the box, but the usually clinical hit man blasted it over from 10 yards. Turner then had another chance 5 minutes after but again he blasted over, after making room for the shot. The final 5 minutes saw Gala press for a winner, but again they found the Chirnside back line hard to break down and were restricted to long range efforts one of which was tipped over by Black in the Chirnside goal.
