Report

Chirnside finished off their league campaign with a hard fought away win against a Langholm team battling relegation.

It was the home team that started the brighter and were unlucky not to score in the opening minutes after the Chirnside defence was caught sleeping, but the striker shot wide. Chirnside however had the best chance of the opening exchanges when a scramble in the opposition’s box saw Ponders effort blocked on the line. Langholm then took a deserved lead when a corner was not properly dealt with by Chirnside and the home side managed to scramble the ball over the line. Chirnside however could have equalised within minutes but Windram who is not renowned for his use of his left foot blasted over from inside the 6 yard box to put forward his contender for miss of the season alongside Shennan, Ponder and Turner. Chirnside were now on the rack with Lugget keeping them in the game with 3 fine saves after some good play by the home team. After a dodgy ten minute period Chirnside managed to steady the ship and get back on level terms on the 25 minute mark. A Hume freekick was met by Turner who put a glancing header past the keeper to level the scores. The men in green could then have made it 2 but Windram managed to pull his shot past the post after racing clear. However with 7 minutes left in the half Chirnside were awarded a penalty after a push on Christie and Turner stepped up to bury it and put the away team in the lead. This turned out to be Turners last contribution, who then had to leave the field due to injury and was replaced by Lauder.

HT 1-2

The second half began with Chirnside having the majority of the possession and they were unlucky not to increase their lead when Lauder made the home keeper pull off a good save. Despite Chirnside having the better of the early exchanges of the half it was Langholm who managed to find the equaliser after an initial good save by Lugget from close range saw the rebound bundled over the line by the Langholm striker. Chirnside then pressed again for a goal in this must win game and duly got one when a good turn by Lauder on the edge of the box saw him rifle an unstoppable effort past the keeper.

Langholm were then unlucky not to equalise when the winger cut inside but he dragged his effort into the side netting. Chirnside then got the all important 4th goal when a breakaway by Windram saw him square the ball for Lauder who managed to score his second of the game. Chirnside then had a couple of chances to further increase their lead but the impressive Langholm keeper kept Chirnside at bay.
