Report
Chirnside’s quest for the Waddell Cup continued with a 4-3 first round victory over Pencaitland. As usual Chirnside made it more difficult than it should have been.
Chirnside started off well and continually put the Pencaitland back line under pressure for the opening minutes of the game. As a result on 7 minutes Chirnside took the lead when Windram was up ended on the edge of the box and Turner dually dispatched the freekick up and over the wall into the back of the net. Chirnside continued to press the game with Pencaitland struggling to get started. Chirnside’s second goal wasn’t long in coming when some good work by Shennan released Turner who made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net. Finally Pencaitland woke up and started to get the ball moving and were unlucky with a couple of long range efforts that just missed the target. However Chirnside looked dangerous every time they were going forward and it wasn’t long before the third goal arrived when Turner sent Windram through on goal and the young striker made no mistake in tucking it away.
Chirnside were then dealt a blow when Young had to be substituted off after getting injured and it was during this period of play while Chirnside were down to 10 men that Pencaitland managed to pull a goal back after the striker managed to score after a scramble in the box.

The second half began with Pencaitland doing the early attacking, and they were in unlucky when the winger saw his header clip the top of the bar. The home side were having the better share of possession but never really caused Chirnside any real problems. Then against the run of play Chirnside got the all important 4th goal when a break up the field by Ponder saw him square the ball for Turner who coolly slotted the ball home for his hatrick. Despite the blow Pencaitland did not give up and did pull a goal back when the winger lost his marker and managed to head the ball goal bound only to bounce over Lugget into the goal. This gave the home side a lift and within in 5 minutes of their second goal they got their third when Lugget, Hume, Windram and Christie all failed to clear the ball from the box and the striker managed to bundle the ball over the line. Despite coming within a goal of an equaliser Pencaitland couldn’t create anymore chances and Chirnside comfortably seen out the last 10 minutes to head into the second round against Lauder.
