Chirnside took on Leithen Rovers in the Waddell Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday, a competition that has seen some clubs make it to the Semi-Final stage already.

This was the third time these teams had clashed this season and if the last encounter was anything to go by this was goin to be another tight affair. The sun was beaming down at Victoria Park and the away team kicked off without veteran sweeper Hume who was a late call off, his place being taken in the team by Johnson.

Right from the start the game appeared to be very open with both sides putting the emphasis on attack. The first chance of the game fell to Windram but he failed to connect with the ball after a scramble in the Leithen box.

The home team were always looking dangerous on the break with their pace down the flanks. Luggett in the Chirnside goal had to look sharp on more than one occasion to clear the ball to safety.

With the first half coming to a close it was the home team that took the lead when the Left Back hit a thunderous 25 yarder that Luggett could only palm into the net. Straight from the kick-off though, Shennan's through ball found Windram in the box and he was taken down by the Rovers Sweeper. Turner stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to make the half time score 1-1.

The second half started off in much the same vein as the first half with both sides on the attack looking for that elusive second goal. Rovers thought they had taken the lead five minutes into the half but Luggett just tipped the ball over the bar in the nick of time.

An hour into the game Chirnside took the lead. A ball over the top was chased down by Shennan and his half volley from 12 yards gave the keeper no chance.

The home team pressed hard for the equaliser but it was the men in green who looked more dangerous on the break. Turner had two chances with his head but one he nodded over and the second skimmed the top of the bar. Leithen never gave up and their Striker thought he'd got the equaliser but his shot from a cross went straight to Luggett.

Shennan had the last chance of the game but his shot flew wide when clean through. Chirnside now go on to face Pencaitland away in the First Round proper.
