Report

Chirnside made the journey up the A1 on Saturday to take on current League Champions Pencaitland.

The match was switched from Pencaitland's home pitch Park View to Macmerry due to waterlogging. The blustery conditions and heavy pitch meant that it was going to be a difficult day for any kind of football to be played.

The away team kicked off down the slope with the wind at their backs. They tried to take advantage of the wind but too often the ball ran away in the wind from the front two of Turner and Lauder. The first chance of the game came in 15 minutes when Young's corner evaded everyone and rebounded back of the Pencaitlands keeper's right hand post. Soon after that the men in green did take the lead when Young's cross from the right was met by Lauder and his header from eight yards gave the keeper no chance.

Pencaitland did have a chance to equalise on the half hour mark but Luggett was quick off his line to snuff out the danger. Before half time Chirnside could have extended their lead but first Turner had his shot well saved then Shennan shot inches wide from 18 yards.

The second half got under way with the home team looking to make better use of the conditions than Chirnside had managed to do in the first half. They were at their most dangerous from set pieces with the two big Centre Half's causing problems in the away penalty box. Chirnside also lost their influential sweeper Hume five minutes into the half through injury and his place was taken by Johnson.

The away team looked to hit on the break and Shennan was looking dangerous down the right. His volley on the hour mark flew just wide and his cut back from the by-line was just missed by substitute Windram.

Pencaitland never stopped battling and they were rewarded with 15 minutes to go when hesitancy in the home defence allowed the substitute Striker to go clean through before lofting the ball over Luggett to complete a neat finish. The goal spurred on the homesters and they laid siege to the Chirnside goal for the last 10 minutes. Luggett in the Chirnside goal made two great saves and his team held out for a 1-1 draw.
