Report

Chirnside entertained the lively people from Newtown on Saturday which turned out to be the papermakers hardest fought game of the season.

Chirnside started like Linford Christie out the blocks and should have went one up with one minute when Turner managed to dribble into the box for a one on one with the Newtown keeper however the usually reliable strikers shot was saved by the keeper.

Chirnside kept the pressure on with Newtown struggling to get out their own half as wave after wave of Chirnside attacks kept them penned in. Turner then had a header brilliantly saved by keeper down to his right handside. Inevitably the opening goal of the game came when the usually erractic dribbler, Ponder, turned two Newtown defenders inside out and left the ball for Shennan to have a shot, his shot however was blocked but the rebound landed at the feet of Lauder who blasted the ball home on his first start for Chirnside. Chirnside continued to press for a second but the Newtown defence held firm and gradually the away team started to come more into the game as they resorted to the more physical style of play that has seen them hard to beat this season. The game was now turning into a physical midfield battle with both teams putting in some meaty challenges and it remained like this until half time.

HT 1-0

The second half began as the first had finished with Newtown leaving the boot in on more than one occasion.

Chirnside done well not to get dragged into this and were still managing to create chances with Turner and Lauder both managing to squander good chances. Newtown did however start to have some half chances as well but they did little to trouble Lugget in the Chirnside goal.

Turner then had two great chances to put the papermakers further ahead however on both occasions the Newtown keeper thwarted his chances. Shennan was now coming more into the game with some good punishing runs into the heart of the Newtown defence but again the finishing that has come to be expected by Chirnsides faithful support was not there. Chirnside then introduced Windram for Lauder and the young shaggy haired striker had an immediate impression when some good tricky footwork saw him get the ball to Shennan who laid it off to Stuart who played a delightful ball into Turner who this time made no mistake in making the net ripple.

Chirnside then had a lapse in concentration when five minutes from time a Newtown corner was badly dealt with by the home side and a shot from the Newtown striker was unfortunately deflected into his own net by Hume.

Chirnside managed to hold on the last few minutes to record a win that should have been more comfortable than it was.
