Report
Chirnside stepped into the unknown to play church side Avendale in the south cup on Saturday and ran out easy winners at a windy Comrades Park.
Chirnside started with the wind behind them and should have been 3 up in the first couple of minutes with the usually clinical Turner missing three chances within the six yard box. Shennan and Ponder then both went close but the scores remained level. Then on the 15 minute mark Turner collected a ball from Shennan and curled a great shot into the top corner from 18 yards out. Chirnside then made it 2 nil when Shennan hit a screamer from 25 yards. The young away team were struggling to get into the game and very rarely threatened the Chirnside goal. Chirnside continued to press for goal but were unable to add to their tally by half time.
HT 2-0
The second half began much the same as the first with Chirnside doing most of the attacking with the home side showing they are just as comfortable playing into the wind as they are with it. Chirnside then made it 3 nil when a good ball by Turner saw him release Ponder who guided the ball past the keeper. Ponder then had a great chance to score his second but the little striker lacked composure and blasted straight at the keeper. Shennan then made it 4 nil when cutting in from the right and scoring at the near post. The same player was then himself showing lack of composure when a Young long throw was flicked on to Shennan at the back post but he managed to blast his shot high and wide with an open goal gaping. However he did make it 5 nil when a good interchange of passing between Ponder, Turner and Shennan resulted in the latter grabbing his hat trick.
