Report

Chirnside travelled to Newton St Boswells on Saturday to play against the only unbeaten team left in the Border Amateur A Division. The tight pitch and terrible pitch conditions made for an interesting closely contested match.

Chirnside started the stronger of the two teams and immediately tried to get their passing game going before the pitch turned into one of Big Gavs Turnip fields. Chirnside did get their passing game going for a brief spell and had the Newtown defence pegged back in their own box. Chirnside did have chances to score when Turner, Stewart, Morrison and Shennan went close but the keeper saved well. Chirnside finally got the breakthrough when a ball from Hume was met at the back post by Shennan to score on 20 minutes. This seemed to wake Newtown up and they now started to come more into the game as the pitch started to deteriorate. Newtown then had a chance to level the score after Stobie pulled down the Newtown striker but the home side failed to convert the penalty. The home side then had a great chance to score from open play but a brilliant block by sweeper Hume kept the paper makers in front. Chirnside then had a chance to further increase their lead but the keeper saved well again from Shennan.

HT 0-1

The second half began with Newton quite content to take the game to the trenches. For long spells this seemed to work without creating any real clear cut chances. Chirnside soaked up the pressure and were quite happy to hit the home side on the counter and were unlucky not to score when good work by Shennan saw him cross the ball for Ponder but in true Ponderesc fashion he had a fresh air swipe at the ball and the chance was gone. Turner himself was having no luck in putting the ball past the Newtown keeper where on numerous occasions the big keeper saving well, the pick of the bunch being a great save to his left hand side. Newtown very nearly had a bit of luck when the right winger sliced his cross and it hit the back post. With only two minutes remaining Chirnside increased their lead with a well time counter attack led by Windram who fed the ball to Shennan who crossed for Lauder to score for the second week running. Chirnside then scored again in injury time when a good defensive header by Turner released Shennan who then fed Windram the ball this time who in turn crossed for Stobie to score and make it 3 nil at the final whistle.
