Report

Chirnside nearly pulled off the unthinkable against Leithen Rovers but fell 4 goals short of sending the league to a playoff.

Chirnside started brightly and went on the attack. The home side dominated the opening 10 mins and deservedly went into the lead when a good ball by Young set up Turner to score. The next goal was not long in coming, this time Turner turned provider as he set up Ponder to grab the second. On the 20 minute mark Logan made it 3 nil again after some good work by Ponder and Turner. Ponder then missed a glorious chance to make it 4 nil but he blasted straight at the keeper when clean through on goal. Turner, Morrison and Stobie then missed half chances as Chirnside continued to bombard the away team’s goal. Morrison then scored the papermakers 4th with a diving header after a good cross by Logan.

HT 4-0

The second half began in much the same fashion with the home side doing much of the attacking. However with 50 minutes gone Leithen Rovers nearly scored but a good save by Lugget kept them at bay. Chirnside soon made it 5 nil when a good run by Logan saw him smash the ball home from a tight angle. Another good save by Lugget kept the clean sheet in tact but the away side were coming more into the game as Chirnside continued to push numbers forward in the search of more goals. Chirnside then missed two fantastic chances when both Turner and Ponder just had the keeper to beat but both made the save easy for the away sides’ keeper.

Leithen Rovers then got on the score sheet after a break away goal to make it 5-1. Chirnside almost immediately replied when Ponder grabbed his second of the game to make it 6-1. However the away side did not give up and after a couple of saves from Lugget they finally managed to get their second of the game. Chirnside now needed 5 goals and pushed Logan and Morrison up front. They managed to get one of the 5 when a good cross from S.Kelly was chested down by Morrison for Turner to hammer into the net. Turner then had another chance when a back heel from Morrison sent him clean through on goal but the big striker again hit straight at the keeper when clean through. Morrison and Logan then went close with a couple of headers but the game finished 7-2.
