Report

Chirnside put in a solid performance to beat newly crowned South Cup champions Gala Rovers at Comrades Park on Saturday.

Chirnside began playing with a tail a wind up the Comrades Park slope and it was clear from the start that Chirnside were going for a convincing win as Shennan tackled the ball from the Gala centre half and shot from long range but the keeper made a comfortable save.

Chirnside continued to press the Gala defence as they continued to play the usual Gala way by trying to play the ball out from the back; more often than not the away sides back line were continually losing possession to a busy front three of Shennan, Turner and Windram.

With Gala Rovers struggling to get out their own half a slack ball resulted in Turner breaking down the left only to be completely taken out by the Gala goalkeeper. This resulted in a shocking refereeing decision when what was clearly a cynical challenge by the keeper saw the referee award a corner with no action being taken against the goal keeper. This seemed to spur Chirnside on even more and a goal was soon to follow when some good work by Young and Shennan saw Windram control a good pass and blast a great shot low into the keepers’ right hand corner.

The men in green had the bit very much between their teeth and could have been two nil up with Turner and Windram both having good chances to score. Just before half time a free kick by Hume was headed to the back post by Morrison for Turner but the big striker volleyed over the bar when a header would been better.

HT 1-0

The second half began with Gala Rovers enjoying their best spell of the game but for all the possession they failed to create a clear cut scoring chance. Chirnside having weathered the storm got back to attacking ways when a great ball by Shennan into the six yard box saw Ponder blast over the bar when he had time to take a touch. Chirnside then had another half chance when a corner from Young was met by Morrison only to see his header deflected for another corner. The game then went into its most uneventful period only to be sparked into life when Morrison was sent off for his second booking after an altercation with the Gala centre half which also saw another 4 Chirnside players booked.

With 10 minutes remaining Chirnside sealed the win when a good cross by Turner was met by Shennan who blasted the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
