Report
Chirnside suffered their second defeat in a row going down 2-4 to Leithen Rovers in the Waddell Cup.
The game began with neither side really creating any clear cut chances with both teams being restricted to long range efforts in the extremely blustery conditions.
With 15 minutes gone the game took a turn for the worse for the men in green when Logan was harshly sent off for a second booking when he was adjudged to have been last man after a tangle with the opposition centre half. This decision by the referee immediately put Chirnside on the back foot and limited their attacks on the opposition goal. However Leithen Rovers found it increasingly difficult to break down the stubborn Chirnside defence and were not allowed any clear cut chances.
Leithen Rovers eventually scored just before half time when a corner
was swung in from the right and was headed downwards towards the goal
by their number 10, Stobie however managed to clear it off the line
only to see his clearance rebound back off goalkeeper Luggets head into
the net to make it one nil to the away team.
HT 0-1
The second half began with the Leithen defence having to contend with the blustery wind in their faces. They were made to work hard by 10 man Chirnside and were content to hit Chirnside on the break. Their patience was awarded when a quick break allowed their striker to make it 2 nil after a fortuitous break of the ball in the box.
This set back did not faze Chirnside and within ten minutes they had pulled a goal back when some good work by Hume, Stobie and Shennan saw the ball being fed into Turner to blast the ball home. This spurred the home side on and they continued to press the Leithen back line but within 5 minutes of the restart Leithen again hit Chirnside on the quick counter and another fortuitous break of the ball landed at the feet of the striker to tap the ball home.
With only ten minutes remaining Chirnside kept pressing for more goals and were rewarded when Shennan was fouled in the box and a penalty was given which Turner slotted away comfortably to make it 2-3. Chirnside should then have been awarded another penalty and Leithen Rovers should have been down to ten men when Stobie was tripped in the box but another horrendous refereeing decision resulted in a free kick being awarded on the eighteen yard line which Turner blasted over the bar. With 2 minutes remaining Leithen Rovers made it 4 -2 after again another quick counter attack.
