Report
Chirnside suffered their first defeat of the season at second bottom Langholm Legion despite playing some of their best football in recent months. The under strength paper makers started the game brightly on a very heavy pitch and had a few long range efforts at the Langholm goal but the goal keeper dealt with these easily.
Chirnside then came with in inches of scoring when Kevin Strachan whipped in a good drive that flashed past the post. Despite having the lions share of the possession Chirnside were not really creating any clear cut chances as Langholm were getting bodies behind the ball. The unthinkable then happened for the men in green when a speculative through ball from the Langholm full back deflected into the path of the home teams winger who then managed to blast the ball past Lugget in the Chirnside goal.
The away side didn’t let their heads go down and had a few half chances to equalise with Windram, McKinnon and Ponder going close from the edge of the box.
HT 1 – 0
The second half began with Chirnside looking to overturn the one goal deficit. But despite having 99% of the possession Chirnside were failing to create any clear cut chances. On the 60 minute mark P.Johnson thought he had scored for the men in green but a terrific save from the home side keeper kept them one goal up.
Chirnside were now getting desperate and were pushing forward continuously with Langholm finding it increasingly difficult to get out there own 18 yard box. However they did manage to hit Chirnside on the break a couple of times but they failed to work Lugget in the Chirnside goal.
Chirnside now with the whole outfield 10 in the Langholm half were starting to see more and more half chances come their way, first up was Stobie who dragged an effort from wide on the right just past the post. Then Windram, McKinnon and debutant Adam Turner all went close but again nothing was clear cut.
The best chance of the game then fell to Ponder after some good work by Logan and Stobie saw the ball arrive at Ponder on the penalty spot but the young midfielder managed to blast over the bar with keeper to beat.
With minutes remaining Chirnside thought they had scored when Morrison headed the ball across the line from Ponders cross but for some reason that shocked both sides the ref gave a foul against Morrison and disallowed the goal.
