Report

Chirnside travelled to Newtongrange Star A hoping to continue there recent run of good results, but were beaten after there poorest performance of the season.

In a scrappy first half Chirnside began by kicking down the substantial hill at Mayfield Sports Complex and should of taken the lead early on when a Turner corner was flapped at by the Newtongrange Keeper but no Chirnside player was on hand to tap in and the chance went a begging. Newtongrange then had the next opportunity when some poor play from the Chirnside midfield allowed the home team a quick counter attack but only some last ditch defending prevented the open goal of the game. The next chance was again to fall for Newtongrange after a quick counter attack but again lat ditch tackle by Stobie kept the game a nil all.

Chirnside then started to get a hold of the game and Stobie then had a great chance to score after some good work by G.Kelly but he managed to scuff his left foot shot past the post. Chirnside again regretted there lack of bravery and commitment at set pieces when the home side keeper was again flapping at corners but no men in green were on hand to put the ball in the net.

Despite playing poorly Chirnside managed to take the lead when G.Kelly managed to play the ball in to Turner down the inside left channel and the striker drove into the box and blasted a left foot shot past the keeper to make the score 0 -1.

Both sides then had a couple of half chances towards the end of the half but nothing came of them.

HT 0-1

The second have began with Chirnside making a tactical change but the home team went immediately on the attack and caused Chirnside problem in and around the box with out creating any real goal scoring chances.

Despite the balance of play being very much in favour of the home side Chirnside did create the first goal scoring chance when some good play by Ponder saw Turner collect the ball in the box and all he needed to do was hit the target but he blasted high wide and handsome.

The home side finally got the goal they deserved after they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and the impressive number 7 placed a good shot round the wall into the bottom left corner of the net.

From here on in it was one way traffic but again the home side failed to create a good clear cut scoring chance. This very nearly came back to haunt them when Chirnside broke down the left with Turner, who got to the by line and cut the ball back to Logan who was unmarked 12 yards from goal. However with the goal gaping Logan managed to pull his shot past the post and the best chance of the game was gone.

The home side then had a goal disallowed when the striker was off side from a free kick.

The winning goal then came from the home side 10mins from time when Chirnside in possession of the ball with a throw in, deep in Newtongrange’s half, made a hash of the throw and the home side broke quickly and got to the bye line and fired a good ball across the face of the goal only to be turned into his own net by the unlucky Johnson.

With time running out Chirnside changed back to there original formation and were immediately on the attack with time running out. The men in green were close to scoring an equaliser when a corner from Turner was headed just over by the unlucky G.Kelly.
