Report
Chirnside were made to work hard for their victory over Third Division Peebles in the first round of the Waddell Cup. The home team had the visitors on the back foot straight from the kick off and their two strikers both had shots just wide of the target. Chirnside couldn't get into their stride and they struggled to come to terms with the bobbly pitch.
It was no surprise that Peebles took the lead on the half hour mark when Lugget could only parry a shot and the rebound was fired home by the alert striker. The away team thought they had equalised near the end of the half but Windram's header was touched on to the post by the keeper.
Chirnside knew if they were to progress then they had to improve considerably after a poor first half showing. Shennan and McKinnon switched positions with the latter moving out to right wing. The change seemed to work as Chirnside came more into the game and Hume thought he had equalised but his free kick was well saved by the Peebles keeper.
The away team managed to to level the scores when Shennan beat the offside trap and placed the ball past the keeper. Chirnside now had their tails up and were pushing for the winner. They thought they had a penalty after the defender appeared to handle the ball in the box but the referee waved away the protests. The winner arrived with fifteen minutes to go when Windram's shot hit the post and went in much to the relief of the the men in green.
Chirnside will be far from happy with their performance but they got the result they came for against a decent Peebles side. Defender Stuart Kelly said: "We got the result and that's all that matters. At times it wasn't pretty but we done enough in the second half to just edge it. Cheers!"
