Report
Any lingering hopes Chirnside had of claiming the league title this season were killed off on Saturday when they lost away to Gala Rovers. Chirnside were again missing several first team players for this league encounter and on to the bench came Wood and Strachan who were looking to come on and make their debuts.
The home side started the better of the two sides and the Chirnside defence had to look sharp on more than one occasion. It was against the run of play after a quick free-kick from Hume that the away team took the lead. Turner looped his header over the keeper to give his side the lead after 15 minutes.
The away team then had two good chances to extend their lead but both Windram and Turner missed the target. Gala pressed for the equaliser and with 10 minutes of the first half remaining their hard work paid off. Following a good run from the left back his initial shot was saved by Lugget, Young then tried to clear his lines but his attempted clearance came back off the Centre Forward and into the net. The away defence appealed that the ball struck the attackers arm but the referee waved away the claims and booked Luggett for dissent.
Into the second half the home team took the lead when the Centre Forward scored his second of the game after a left foot shot from 20 yards. The away team should have equalised five minutes later but Windram's free header from six yards hit a defender and the ball was cleared to safety.
Rovers added number three soon after when Chirnside failed to clear the ball properly and the left midfielder stroked the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The game was made safe with 20 minutes to go when the striker despatched a shot from 10 yards past Luggett.
Chirnside tried to push for a consolation but their final ball let them down. Chirnside know now their only hope for any more silverware this season lies with the two cups they are still involved in. Keeper Jason Luggett said: "If we had kept it at 1-0 at half-time then I think we had a chance but their goal gave them a lift and we never really looked liked scoring in the second half."
