Report

Chirnside made the journey up the A1 on Saturday in a quest for another three points against league champions Pencaitland. Chirnside started off the brighter off the two teams and Bolton who was seeing plenty of the ball on the left had two shots well saved by the home keeper. The breakthrough came on the half hour when Chirnside were awarded a corner on the left and Ponder struck a low, swerving cross which evaded everyone in the box and nestled in the far corner of the net.

The goal gave confidence to the away team and they built on their lead when good hold up play by G.Kelly released Turner and he produced an unstoppable right foot shot from 20 yards which dipped over the keeper and into the net.

After half time Pencaitland began to press the game more and this resulted in a number of corners which Chirnside did well to defend. However the killer blow was struck after 60 minutes when Shennan burst down the right and his low, hard delivery was knocked into his own net by a home defender after pressure from Ponder. Pencaitland did pull a goal back 15 minutes from time when a free kick on the left was floated in, Lugget made a good inital stop from a header but the centre half was there to volley in the rebound.

G Kelly was then unfortunate not to score himself when he put the home defence under pressure, managing to win the ball but he was unlucky to see his delightful chip on the goalkeeper rebound off the postto safety. The home team tried to push for another goal but were caught cold when Turner spotted the keeper yards off his line and his turn and left foot shot from 50 yards made the final score 4-1.

Goal hero Andy Ponder said: "I thought the whole team played really well, I think my new hair-do suits me and made me more stream-lined."
