Conan Doyle Cup Final 1931 - Chirnside Utd 3 Hawick United 3

Played at Raidstone Park, Galashiels, before a small crowd, Chirnside winning the toss. Hawick kicked off but Chirnside went away to the other end where J .Vier lost a good chance by shooting over. The same player repeated the performance later. Still keeping at it, Chirnside kept the Hawick defence on tenterhooks, but J.Vier put past when well placed. A few minutes later he put over the bar. R.Vier had hard luck with a header which hit the crossbar with Tait beaten. A foul against W.Johnstone gave Hawick relief.

Pressing hard the Chirnside defence gave nothing away. Paterson at this stage was defending well, ably backed up by J.Johnstone and Wood. Chirnside missed a great chance when Ferguson crossed into the goal mouth and three forwards missed the ball completely. A good save by Kerr was the next incident. Chirnside continued to press and a good shot from R.Vier was stopped, luckily on the line, by Tait, with Johnstone in close attendance. A further scramble in the Hawick goalmouth resulted in a corner to Chirnside but nothing accured. Then to everyone’s surprise Hawick scored. Grant taking a loose ball up and drove softly for goal, which Kerr misjudged, the ball entering the net. A few minutes later they went further ahead through Augustus, who seemed offside.

The opening stages of the second half saw Chirnside force matters, R.Vier was going through when he was brought down but the kick yielded nothing. Hawick then raced to the other end and secured a third goal through Augustus. The defence was at fault here. This was all against the run of play, but Paterson rallied his men and soon had Hawick on the defensive. R.Vier at this stage was trying hard. Stiff pressure was applied and in a scramble W.Johnstone scored. A few minutes later R.Vier gave over to Ferguson and from his cross R.Veir scored a great goal. Still pressing Chirnside equalised through Paterson a few minutes from time.

Hymers, Augustus, and Dick were prominent for Hawick, while R.Vier, W.Paterson and J.Johnstone served Chirnside well. Mr D.Rankine, Galashiels, officiated in a workmanlike manner.
