Report

Division C Chirnside United Colts 4 - Peebles 5

Chirnside Colts started handing out their Christmas presents early this year which they delivered on Saturday in the guise of 5 goals to Peebles in a match which was played in torrential rain and a Colts team which were clearly hung over from the Mad Friday celebrations.

Peebles took the lead early on direct from a corner when Brandon Pollock allowed the ball to go under his foot at the near post and into the net. The Colts equalised within two minutes from a great cross from Daniel Pattenden to find Dan Romaines who glanced a fine header into the corner of the net. Some slack marking from Michael Tweedie allowed his man to run off him and score from 18 yards to make the score 2 – 1 to Peebles.

Once again the Colts drew level after Luke Turner got his head to the ball after a goal mouth scramble to make the score 2 – 2. The Colts had a couple of chances to snatch the lead after that when Daniel Pattenden elected to pass the ball rather than shoot and another shot from Dan Romaines which he hit on the turn for it just to go the wrong side of the post.

After that the toll of celebrations of the night before kicked in as the Colts run out of steam with Peebles taking full advantage by rattling in three quick goals. The first of the goals came when centre half Ryan Blaikie went on one of his mazy runs and lost posession leaving his defensive partner Paul Johnston isolated at the back and with the ball being quickly played into the void which Peebles centre forward took full advantage of to go by Johnston to score. They added another two quick goals shortly thereafter one from a deflection and another from what looked like an offside position to make the half time score 5 – 2 to Peebles.

A rather irate Manager Pete Morrison gave the half time team talk, made a couple of changes and sent them out again to try and make the score a bit more respectable and the Colts just about pulled it off with a much improved second half performance by tightening up at the back and keeping their shape better.

With the Colts now dominating the game but finding it extremely difficult to break down a very well organised Peebles defence and with all the subs on now for the Colts the breakthrough came with 20 minutes left when Paul Blacklock picked the ball up in midfield and went on a mazy run leaving defenders in his wake to slam the ball home from 12 yards giving the whole team a lift.

Dan Romaines should have made it 4 but he headed over from a good position. Paul Blacklock did make the score 5 – 4 when with 5 minutes left he headed in at the post. Colts Keeper Jason Lugget pulled off a great save from a Peebles breakaway to keep the score at 5-4 and time finally ran out for the Colts for Peebles to take all three points.
